Mary Immaculate Mariners March 5k

Eight-year old Cassadee Wellings, a Mary Immaculate second grader picks up the pace down the stretch to the finish line to finish with a time of 36:31. She said breathlessly, “I’m really, really happy. This was my first race with my friends Gabi, Jesse, Iliana, and Katrina!”

Over 350 runners and walkers, some as young as 6, showed up to support the first annual run to support Mary Immaculate Star of the Sea School. The word was spread through the Southernmost City with promotion and… the promise of pizza! The classes competed to see who could bring in the most registrations. The winners got to fuel up with pizza and ice cream.

According to race organizer and father Bascom L. Grooms IV, “It appears the second grade class are going to be the ones celebrating!”

He volunteered to spearhead the event because he wanted to introduce a new element to campus and the church which would motivate the kids, teachers, and parents to all exercise and lead a more healthy lifestyle.

“I feel the mission was accomplished. We had many Mary Immaculate students, teachers, and parents that ran or walked their first 5k ever!”

About 100 children under the age of 9 participated in the Fun Run. All of the the money raised will be used to pad the school’s general fund. We’ve posted more pics on Facebook!
