Micah Scott Cox was born Dec. 29, 2012 in Lakeland, Fla. and immediately placed in the welcoming arms of his adoptive parents, Patricia and Jeffery Cox of Marathon, weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces.

Micah has an especially sweet birth story that started many years ago when his mom — Trish, as she’s called around town— dreamed of adopting a little boy and culminated just before the end of the 2012 in the middle of the state.

“It’s just so amazing the way the whole thing came together,” Trish said.

It was a mere four weeks from when the couple was okayed by the private adoption agency to the day the baby was born, the couple said. According to Jeff, any obstacle was easily overcome. According to Trish, they felt “full of peace” as the adoption unfolded — meeting the birth mother, holding the baby for the first time, signing the papers and promising to take good care of the little infant swaddled in hastily assembled hand-me-downs from family members.

“I just want to express my thanks to the community and individuals that have already donated to our adoption fund or pledged to do so,” Jeff said.

“I really want to share our story because I think sometimes couples don’t adopt because they think it will be too hard or too costly. But the community has come together in a way we never anticipated and we can see God’s work in all of the details,” Trish said.

Jeff is the youth pastor at New Assembly of God, leading a pack of about 30 full-time teenagers. Trish works for Cristian’s landscaping and helps with youth group activities. Both are active in the community, whether it’s manning the church’s bake sale table or running local 5ks.

The private adoption will cost just under $17,000 and while the couple has a savings account for this very purpose, and help from family members, the Cox family still needs help to meet their obligations to the professionals that facilitated the birth of the new family.

At presstime, Micah was at the pediatrician’s for his first checkup. His mom and dad say he’s eating and sleeping well and quite at home in Marathon.

Micah’s paternal grandparents are Richard and Vicki Cox of Rockford, Michigan and his maternal grandparents are Jerri Veber of Tampa, Florida and Randy and Maria Veber of Homestead, Florida.
