A brush fire on the National Key Deer refuge on Big Pine Key Tuesday night caused one home to be evacuated and shut down Key Deer Boulevard as firefighting crews worked to extinguish the blaze.

Deputies and Monroe County firefighters responded to the fire at 5:50 p.m., located north of Wildwood Lane on Big Pine Key. Fire hoses had to be stretched across Key Deer Boulevard from the Eden Pines Substation to Wildwood Lane so firefighters could fight the fire.

The area burning was primarily wooded, and was reported to be primarily federal property. The fire was extinguished and the road opened by 8 p.m.

Officials have yet to determine the cause of the blaze, but have confirmed it was not part of a controlled burn.
