Come Sail Away
From learning how to sail to refining sailing skills, the Key West Sailing Club’s Summer Youth Sailing Program offers a summer of fun and educational activities on the water. Children 8 to 16 years old are encouraged to learn and practice sailing in a fun and safe environment based on US Sailing’s guiding principles during 2 weeks sessions. Legendary knot-tier and salty seaman Rodger McVeigh says, “Space is limited so sign up early! Tuition is a mere $250 per kid, but discounts are available for multiple sessions or multiple offspring.” Scholarships will also be awarded based on need.  Registration will be held Saturday, June 6 from 10 am – 2 pm at the Key West Sailing Club, 705 Palm Avenue, Key West, 33040 (located behind Spencer’s Boat Yard at the southwest end of the Palm Avenue Bridge).

Keep those puppies safe
As you stock up with batteries, water and cans of food for this year’s hurricane season, don’t forget that if you have to evacuate, you will have to have a suitable carrier in which to transport your pets. Last season, the FKSPCA was deluged with requests for pet carriers each time a hurricane was forecast. This year, for the month of June only, as a public service they have ordered crates in various sizes that they are selling at cost to enable pet owners to plan ahead in case of an emergency.

Tammy Fox, executive director, strongly advises pet owners to be prepared for an emergency, especially at this time of year.  Fox also recommends pet owners to check the ASPCA’s comprehensive checklist for disaster preparedness at, which includes special tips for birds, reptiles and small animals.

Supplies of pet crates are limited. For more information, call 294.4857.
