Local Church Looking for Singers for Christmas Eve Program
Marathon Community United Methodist Church located at 3010 O/S Highway will begin rehearsing a Christmas Cantata for performance on Christmas Eve on Saturdays from 10am-Noon beginning Saturday, October 16.

Music and rehearsal CDs will be provided; all that is required is a pencil, commitment to rehearsals and the performance, and a love of singing.

ECMC Incredible Fruit Stand
The ECMC Incredible Fruit Stand sells fresh produce and plants on Saturday in Marathon at Mile Marker 50, Gulf side. Special orders are available. All proceeds benefit ECMC youth programs. For more information, call (305) 743-6215.

Marathon Calling Vendors for City Celebration
The City of Marathon is looking for vendors who wish to have a booth at the City’s Celebration to be held at Marathon Community Park on Saturday, November 20, 2010. “This one-day event is going to be a huge party,” said Event Committee Chair and Mayor Ginger Snead, “and it’s the perfect place for vendors to show and sell their wares, and for our local non-profits to raise awareness and maybe some money, too.”

There are three categories (and entry fees) for vendor participation: Not-For-Profit at $25.00; For Profit (local/Marathon-based) at $50.00; and For Profit at $75.00. Space is limited and is available on a first come/first serve basis. Application deadline is November 5, 2010.

A furry blessing

St. Columba Episcopal Church in Marathon will host their annual Blessing of Pets. The celebration is in honor of St. Francis of Assisi who is remembered by Christians worldwide as a lover of all creatures great and small. The blessing will take place outdoors in St. Columba’s prayer garden at 451 West 52nd St., Gulf, (behind Panda House Restaurant) at 5:30 pm. Each pet will receive a St. Francis medal. Treats will be available for the pets and Hot Dogs will be served to our human guests in the Parish Hall after the blessing. For more information phone (305) 743-6412.

Fight Cancer with Spaghetti
The Marathon Middle School Relay for Life Team will hold a spaghetti dinner fundraiser, Thursday, October 14, 2010 at the Marathon Moose Lodge 5:30-8:00pm. Tickets are $7.50 for adults and $6 for children eleven and under. Take out is available. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. Tickets are available at door. Garden Club kicks off

The Marathon Garden Club will kick off its 2010/2011 season on Friday, October 15 at 11:30 am. Open to the public, free of charge, a light lunch will be served followed by a presentation on “Houses & Insects” presented by Sarah Cizmas from Habitat for Humanity and Colleen Fitzsimmons from Mosquito Control.

A plant clinic sponsored by University of Florida Monroe County Extension Master Gardeners will be held on Saturday, October 16 from 9am-12noon.

The Garden Club will be hosting its Fall Festival on Saturday, November 27. Featured items will include a variety of tropical plants from the garden club’s own nursery, delicious homemade baked goods, educational booths, raffle items, local artisans, and crafts; food, music and activities for children. Indoor & outdoor vendor space is available at reasonable rates for this event. Contact Linnea Cunningham at (305) 743-2008.
