Key West Police Detective Janeth Calvert was awarded a Chief’s Commendation for her role in solving a 2009 murder case.

On October 31, 2009, a fight broke out in the overwhelming crowd generated by Fantasy Fest. It was soon clear that a young man had been stabbed. The crowd became unruly and numerous officers responded to a call for backup.

“Detective Calvert, you assumed responsibilities and Lead Detective on the case,” said Chief Donie Lee as he presented the award, “and you organized the scene and investigation.”

Over the next few days, Detective Calvert worked continuously, interviewing as many as 12 witnesses and three potential suspects. Her work ultimately led to the arrest of the lone suspect whom she arrested and charged with the murder of Marques Butler.

“You are to be commended on your professionalism and performance on this case,” said Chief Lee.
