Device Found to be a Toy

Streets were reopened around 4 pm today following approximately an hour’s closure while Key West Police and Fire responded to a possible explosive device in front of a house in the 700 block of White Street. Officers immediately cleared the area and set a perimeter.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Bomb Unit arrived on scene, and Sgt. Bobby Randolph directed the automated robot to explore the device. Upon closer scrutiny, it was found to be a novelty hand grenade. The resident of the home, who had been napping inside, came out and explained that his son had given it to him as a Father’s Day gift. Apparently the toy grenade was dropped outside when the family moved some boxes.
