NEW this year to the Dragonboat Festival is the Dragon’s Nest Children’s Area. This daycare center will be located next to the park’s playground.
Home Depot, Marathon Department of Parks and Recreation, The National Marine Sanctuary and Mosquito Control are a few of the vendors providing activities to keep your children entertained. There is also a Temporary Tike Parking tent for racers that want to bring their children for a day at the beach and need a short-term sitter while they’re splish-splashin’ in the water. Simply check your child in, race, check your child out and enjoy your day with the whole family.
Also, if you’re wondering if individuals can be part of the race competition, the answer is: you sure can! As the field of registered teams continues to grow so is the need for paddlers.
Team Coordinator, Kathy McFadden is maintaining a Paddlers’ Pool that is a listing of individuals looking to join a dragon boat team. Teams that are short members for a race crew can dip into the pool and complete their rosters. Currently there are over 30 individuals ready to join a team.
The team registration deadline is April 24. The benefits of early team registration besides first dibs on the Paddlers’ Pool include first choice of team T-shirt colors, preferred placement in Athletes’ Village and the best slot for your team practice/coaching sessions being held May 1 through May 7 at Parrotdise Waterfront in Little Torch Key and at Sombrero Beach the night before the races.
Battle in the Bay Dragon Boat Festival is May 8 at Sombrero Beach in Marathon.
