CAUTION: Fantasy Fest Photos Below, You Know What I mean…
A medical administrator by day, Lisa Barfield has been participating in Fantasy Fest since 1992!
“I missed when Wilma hit, and then another one,” she reflects after having popped back into her historic hide-a-way to apply body glitter over her sequined ensemble. She’s about to head to Fogarty’s Red Party. “My girl friend worked at Eckerd’s on Truman, that’s now CVS. She wanted me to come down to this festival thing and it was just wild, and I just decided to start coming back after that!”
For the first six years, Barfield took in the event as a spectator. But, not anymore. Now the hometown hottie from Ocean Springs, Mississippi is a party-going, costume-wearing, float-riding caper!
“I guess you have to get comfortable,” she sits back relaxing for her Seattle friends to come meet her. “I get to know different people here every year, and every year we all meet up again. It’s cool, this is the only time we see each other.”
This year, she’s packed her new boyfriend, Carlo Coyne, amidst the suitcase of costumes.
“Oh, I love it. Halloween is my favorite,” he attests.
Horns, fangs, and spray-painted red spiked hair add to the ambiance of the couple’s costumes.
“So far we’ve dressed up for Fetish Night. We went as cops Tuesday,” Lisa recalls. “Tonight we have on red. Thursday we’ll wear white with toga accessories and on Friday were doing the Pimp and Ho thing. Then Saturday we’re on the floats, so we have to do vixens and vampires.”
Planning their characters is just part of the fun Coyne, a security officer, says.
“It’s fun! Picking out all of the stuff! It’s like being a kid in the candy store, and brings you back to when you were a kid out trick‘r treating.”
Their fantasy fun doesn’t happen on a whim, and the trick is the cost.
Barfield dishes, “Well, not only to come down here you have to have all of your accessories. It takes money to come down and be elaborate. I mean, think about the body paint. It’s $75 a day to be body painted, and then your average costume probably costs that.”
But, she shares she never recycles from fantasies past, “Guys take pictures every year and they say, ‘I saw you and you were wearing the same thing.’”
The fanfare and fantasy are well worth the investment she’s had to make in plastic tubs to store the apparel in.
“I would never be able to dress like this where I live, not even for a Halloween party,” the southerner stresses. “
Afte rall, the memories, her and her boyfriend agree, are incalculable.
Two drag queens pulled my shirt off outside of 801. Yeah, I got violated outside of 801,” Coyne laughs.
Barfield’s all-time favorite attire is a Spanish-style dress she wore in 2002 mimicking the heroine in Zorro.
For the Fetish Party Monday at Kelly’s the Mississippi girl embraces her darkest desires with boyfriend Carlo Coyne.
The planning takes months, costume shopping can be creatively taxing, and the financial investment could buy a small compact car! But, Lisa Barfield is gung-ho about the memories that’ll last a lifetime. Her boyfriend Carlo relishes in some man-handling outside of Bourbon Bar 801.
For Capt. Tony’s Party in Plaid Lisa decides she doesn’t want to wear plaid, she wants to wear a badge! “No one else dressed like a cop, so that’s what I went as!”
The Devil wore Prada and Lisa Barfield wears sequins! I acquire something new, something red, every year! I have shoes I just wear for Fantasy Fest!”
