Compete in ‘Best of’ Key Lime Pie Championships

Hundreds of restaurants claim to have the best Key Lime Pie, but only one will take home the Blue Ribbon in the 2014 Key Lime Pie Championships. Registration is now live for bakers in both commercial and independent divisions with awards and bragging rights for classic and innovative pies. Judging is based on a point system with nine criteria overseen by members of The American Pie Council. Deadline for entry is Friday, July 4. Competition and judging will take place Saturday, July 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Smokin’ Tuna, 4 Charles Street. For complete rules, registration and judging criteria visit www.keylimefestival.com/pie-championships.

 Speed eaters wanted

The Key Lime Festival is now registering contenders for the 2014 Mile High Key Lime Pie Eatin’ Contest. First place trophies adorned in red, white and blue and topped with a pig will be awarded to the person who can eat an entire Key Lime Pie smothered in nearly a foot of whipped topping faster than their competition. Event kicks off Friday, July 4 at 11:30 a.m. on Greene Street in front of Old City Hall as part of the Key Lime Piestravaganza, followed by a high noon world record attempt by festival organizers and The Key West Key Lime Pie Co. to make the world’s largest Key Lime Pie.
