Davis scores unanimous decision
Dyah Davis scored a unanimous decision over Alfonso Lopez Friday to take the North American Boxing Federation’s Super Middle Weight title.
Davis, 30, of Boca Raton, Fla., and Lopez, 29, of Huntsville, Texas, went the full 10 rounds during the main event of a nine-bout card dubbed “Fight Night in the Keys.” It was staged in an outdoor boxing ring at Mallory Square, normally a venue for Key West visitors to enjoy sunset celebrations.
Davis bettered his fight record to 21-2-1, while Lopez is now 22-2.
In a second highlight event, Denis Douglin, 23, of Marlboro, N.J., won a split decision over Steven Martinez, 21, of Bronx, N.Y. Douglin is now 14-1, while Martinez dropped to 11-2.
The tradition of boxing in Key West dates back to the 1930s when novelist Ernest Hemingway used to officiate sparring matches in an outdoor ring near his home on Whitehead Street.
