FKCC to Graduate Upper Keys Basic Law Enforcement Academy

Florida Keys Community College’s Institute for Public Safety will celebrate the completion of Basic Law Enforcement Academy #41 with a graduation ceremony on Friday, July 1 at 6:30p.m. at the Murray E. Nelson Government and Cultural Center in Key Largo.  Seven students successfully completed the 770-hour training program and upon passing the state certification exam, will become Florida Law Enforcement Officers.

The ceremony will be attended by representatives of both Monroe County and Miami-Dade law enforcement agencies and will include remarks from FKCC Director for Public Safety Marc Halvorson and the academy’s Class Captain Alberto Rodriguez. Assistant Chief of the Biscayne Park Police Department, Antonio Sanchez, will give the commencement address and later swear-in one of the graduates to his police force.

Halvorson will also recognize the best and the brightest of the class with awards for superior academic performance, leadership, “Top Gun” shooting skills, and the most pride, integrity, and guts—or “PIG” award.

FKCC’s Basic Law Enforcement program satisfies the training requirements of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.  Program coursework surveys the criminal justice system and provides training in basic law and legal procedures, communications, vehicle operations, investigations, defensive tactics, first aid, traffic stops, firearms, patrol techniques and crowd control.

FKCC is currently accepting applications for two Basic Law Enforcement academies that begin in August. The part-time, night time academies will be offered on the Key West Campus and at the college’s Upper Keys Center in Tavernier.  For more information about FKCC’s Institute for Public Safety, visit http://www.fkcc.edu/academics/criminal-justice.da.
