The American Red Cross Greater Miami & the Keys Chapter is proud to announce the Florence Spottswood 2017 Humanitarian of the Year Honorees, Ross and Janice Elwell and family, and the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Honoree, Dr. Shirley Freeman.

The Elwell family, who founded Royal Furniture in 1984, continue to serve the community through outreach and charitable support.

In a teary eyed acceptance, Janice Elwell, thanked her family and friends. “I am not usually the talker,” she said. “We are just in awe and so blessed. We all so feel that if you give, then you get back; and that has happened to us throughout the years so many times.”

The Lifetime Achievement award is bestowed during those years that an outstanding community leader is identified and recognized for years of exceptional service and Dr. Shirley Freeman epitomizes the criteria. As a former mayor of Monroe County and always front and center at community events, she said at the event she is humbled and honored to have been considered for this award.

Dr. Shirley Freeman has been chosen as the 2017 Lifetime Achievement honoree for her lifetime of dedication to education, arts, and the Key West community. The announcement party was hosted by Bert Whitt and Dennis Beaver, the 2016 honorees.
