Elwell family and Shirley Freeman honored
The American Red Cross Greater Miami & the Keys Chapter is proud to announce the Florence Spottswood 2017 Humanitarian of the Year Honorees, Ross and Janice Elwell and family, and the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Honoree, Dr. Shirley Freeman.
In a teary eyed acceptance, Janice Elwell, thanked her family and friends. “I am not usually the talker,” she said. “We are just in awe and so blessed. We all so feel that if you give, then you get back; and that has happened to us throughout the years so many times.”
The Lifetime Achievement award is bestowed during those years that an outstanding community leader is identified and recognized for years of exceptional service and Dr. Shirley Freeman epitomizes the criteria. As a former mayor of Monroe County and always front and center at community events, she said at the event she is humbled and honored to have been considered for this award.
The Florence Spottswood Humanitarian of the Year award was established in 1995 to recognize outstanding works of local community members. The honorees will be recognized at the American Red Cross Gala on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 at Key West Beachside Marriot.
