Bahamian Defense Ships take water and diapers home

An idea hatched at a simple happy hour in Marathon, since 9 ships of the Bahamian Defense Force were riding out Hurricane Matthew in Key West, why not send them home with some supplies? In just a matter of days, City managers Charles Lindsey from Marathon and Jim Scholl from Key West were able to organize donations of more than 25,000 bottles water and 1000 diapers up and down the Keys.  Strunk Ace Hardware helped provide palettes and plastic wrap for donations. Then Friday night, Bahamian Commander Carlon Bethel set sail with two dozen palettes headed to the most ravaged part of our sister islands, New Providence home of the capital Nassau.

“It was a bittersweet stay, we enjoyed Key West very much but we are anxious to get home,” said Commander Bethel thankful for the hospitality and supplies.
