The Key West City Commissioners were among the first to receive a very special wall calendar for the year 2011. At the last City Commission meeting, Fire Chief David Fraga distributed a copy of the new Pierce calendar to each commissioner. The full color calendar features the city’s Pierce Velocity pumper truck.
“This calendar is of national significance,” says Fraga. “It is a huge honor to be chosen. Departments across the country apply again and again for the opportunity to feature their equipment.”
Professional photographer John Lewis came to Key West in June and photographed the truck in a variety of locations. The photo that actually made the calendar was shot just as the sun rose at the Southernmost Point. The oversized calendar also features a banner of smaller photos of the department and its personnel. A legend in the corner tells about the community’s size as well as the number of firefighters and fire stations.
The compilation also has a portrait of Chief Fraga. “Purchasing a new apparatus is a pretty big deal,” he says in the quote on the calendar. “So we considered and evaluated our needs very carefully. Those needs include firefighter safety, product design, overall response and customer service – during and after the sale.”
Phoenix Arizona is the first truck featured, followed by departments of various size. The tropical photo of the Key West Fire Department’s truck comes in December, 2011.
“They saved the best for last,” Chief Fraga said!
The calendar is distributed to fire departments throughout the nation and even to departments in other countries. It is distributed by Pierce Manufacturing/ Medtec Ambulance, and the back side of each photo shows a full schematic of the featured truck. The pumper truck is Key West’s newest truck and was purchased with grant funding.
