Amie and Jimmy White recently opened one of Marathon’s newest additions to the local restaurant scene, but the longtime Summerland residents have made their new venture a family affair.
She was an assistant manager at Looe Key Reef Resort for many years, and he’s been a career commercial fisherman for the past three decades.
“The only things we know are fishing and food!” she exclaimed, adding that opening a restaurant that focuses on fresh, local seafood was the best option for launching a family business.
Jimmy designed the menu after his grandmother’s recipes. Her Bahamian influence shines through in the Island’s Seafood Shack menu, and Amie said it’s dishes like the heaping portion of conch salad and crabmeat stuffed shrimp that’s kept patrons coming back for more since their opening less than a month ago.
“We opened on a Saturday morning and tried to do it quietly, but the phone was ringing off the hook first thing Monday morning,” she laughed.
She’s also made multiple trips to Office Depot for copies of hundreds of menus they’ve happily distributed to the community.
Only days after opening, the kitchen had already exhausted their supply of clam strips!
“We really opened this restaurant so we could have something to give to our kids,” she continued. “The only way to make a living here is to work for yourself. And since it’s a family business, we know they’re dedicated to their work and will take pride in our investment. We’re all in this together.”
Jimmy’s a Conch, and she’s lived in the Keys for nearly all her adult life. Not only do they bring in the freshest catches off their own vessels, if they’re not catching it, they know where to get it.
They offer up plenty of seafood appetizers, sandwiches, salads and platters at an affordable price.
From conch to fish, shrimp, scallops and lobster, Island’s Seafood Shack offers a variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and platters at extremely affordable prices.
The Captain’s Platter includes two oysters, two scallops, a crabmeat stuffed shrimp, two pieces of fish and fried conch with coleslaw, garlic bread and your choice of red skinned butter potatoes, baked potato or French fries for $16.95…now that’s a mouth full!
Amie said the Bacon-Wrapped Lobster and Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp appetizers that are grilled in your choice of mild, medium or hot sauce, barbecue, garlic butter or teriyaki sauce are also proving a popular item for repeat customers. Their fresh smoked fish dip is good enough to eat sans crackers with only a spoon!
The staff is also willing to accommodate special orders and happily prepared the Scallop Sandwich, typically served only fried, in a blackening seasoning that was simply delicious next to a double order of fresh homemade coleslaw. For all you non-seafood eaters, they also offer a burger, cheese steak and chicken sandwiches as well as a children’s menu.
Located at 11399 Overseas Highway in Marathon, Island’s Seafood Shack is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 6 am to 10 pm. (305) 396-7530.
