In a community like Marathon, where a fisherman’s day is well under way before the sun comes up and deals are made or broken over a cup of coffee and a handshake, it’s no wonder The Stuffed Pig remains a long-standing institution in this community.

A down-to-earth breakfast spot just off U.S. 1 in the heart of town, don’t judge this book by its cover. Just look at the cars overflowing the parking lot or the line of hungry breakfast goers who patiently wait for a table while the friendly and experienced wait staff zip around the garden patio and recently added outdoor tiki dining space. It’s clear this is the place to be!

Owner Karen Dennis opened more than a quarter century ago with decades of food service experience, and she hired a competent staff to help feed hungry locals year round as well as the plethora of tourists that return year after year to “get stuffed.”

Though there are several quaint breakfast spots in town, The Stuffed Pig takes the morning meal to a whole new level.

The “World Famous” Pig’s Breakfast is probably one of the most popular items on the menu. It includes two pancakes; two eggs prepared the way you’d like; two pieces of bacon; two pieces of sausage; a heap of home fries and slices of toast.

But there’s also a selection of “Bennys” or variations on another brunch staple, eggs benedict. Paying homage to a native Keys crustacean, the menu features a lobster “benny” that simply uses healthy pieces of lobster instead of Canadian bacon. Another “benny” to which I’m particularly partial is the Tomato and Spinach Benny….mmmmmmm!

There are several vegetarian and healthy options on The Pig’s menu, but ALWAYS remember to check the daily specials board. Keep your eyes peeled for gems like Banana and Pecan or Peach and Pecan pancakes. Clearly, everything at The Pig is made from scratch and designed to fill your belly.

After sampling specialty omelets like the Sausage, Mushroom, Onion and Pepperjack Cheese, belly up to the retail shop in the rear garden and score yourself a sweet shirt to celebrate the occasion. What makes for better vacation memorabilia than a shirt proclaiming, “I Got Stuffed!” at The Stuffed Pig Restaurant?

Pig memorabilia is certainly not in short supply both inside and outside the cozy restaurant. Porcelain pigs, stuffed pigs, painted pigs and pictures of pigs claim nearly every inch of wall space inside, and in the garden area, the restaurant’s ambassador, Willie B. Bacon, oversees the daily operation of the joint.

Dennis and her staff are always willing to extend their hours and host various community fundraising functions for everyone from Marathon’s largest daycare facility to the high school athletics programs.

An annual tradition resurrected last year in honor of the restaurant’s 25th anniversary – National Pig Day – will return to Marathon next weekend! For more information about Pig Day, check out the related story in this issue. You don’t want to miss this unique event!
