Monroe County closes KW airport, animal shelters; LKMC closes too - A sign on the side of the road - Key West International Airport

According to Monroe County:

 

  1. The Key West International Airport will close Wednesday night after the last flight due to TSA’s security checkpoint ceasing the screening of airline passengers. The last flight is Delta # 567, departing for Atlanta at 5:50 p.m. All commercial flights at Key West International Airport will be canceled from Thursday morning until further notice. General aviation will continue at Key West International Airport until conditions become unsafe to operate.

 

  1. The Florida Keys SPCA Key West and Marathon campuses are in the process of evacuating all animals out of the Keys for Hurricane Irma. The Key West shelter is evacuating 89 cats, 1 chicken, 24 dogs, 23 rabbits, 8 land turtles and 1 parakeet

The Marathon campus is evacuating 43 cats, 8 dogs, 4 water turtles, 1 box turtle and 3 iguanas. The animals are being evacuated to a network of foster homes. The animals will be kept safe until after the storm. If the foster caretakers need to evacuate, they commit to evacuating with the animal.

 

According to Lower Keys Medical Center:

 

  1. The hospital is working with local and regional emergency personnel and the North Carolina National Guard, per its protocol, and expect the C130 transport tomorrow. At that time, approximately 10 to 15 medical/surgical and behavioral health patients will be transported to Gadsden Regional Medical Center in Gadsden, Alabama. Elective surgeries and procedures at LKMC are cancelled from Wednesday, Sept. 6, through Monday, Sept. 11 as of this time.
