Art Contest at Book and Books

It’s not necessarily a requirement to be an artist to win an art contest maybe just an avid reader. Start with a book, a favorite book and from there create a masterpiece. There’s a whopping $500 shopping spree for art supplies at stake. Books and Books at The Studios of Key West is holding a summer art contest combining two favorite genres, art and books. Create a piece of art inspired by a favorite book, novel, novella, or short story and have a chance to be shown at Books and Books for the month of October, as well as, again, $500 in art supplies. All ages and interpretations are welcome.

Only one piece will be allowed, but think big like Pablo Picasso’s Don Quixote (1955) or Salvador Dalí’s Mad Tea Party (1969) about “Alice in Wonderland”. Inspiration could be anything from Stephen King’s  “The Shining” leaving haunting memories or Dr. Seuss’s “Green Eggs and Ham” that seemed rather tempting. Anything goes but be conscious of space, Books and Books has to keep room for well, books.

“We are keeping it open to interpretation,” continued Berg, “We just want to see if a favorite book can conjure an image.”

Didn’t know Books and Books is an art store as well? Offering canvases, paints, brushes, mediums, gessos, drawing supplies, watercolor supplies, the back room is filled with favorites from Windsor & Newton, Golden, Gamblin and more.

“Book and Books has a strong affiliation with the all artists of Key West not just at The Studios “ said Emily Berg, of Books and Books. “And we know there is limited places to buy art supplies in Key West.”

There’s still plenty of time. Register online or at the store and drop off finished art work at the store Thursday,  September 28th and Friday, September 29th between 10am-6pm to be reviewed. There is a $10 registration fee but free to Loyalty Members. Prizes for 2nd and 3rd place winners as well and yes, the artwork can be available for sale in the store with a commission split 25/75 (75% to the artist).
