Old Fashioned Ice Cream & Fresh Fruit Social Benefits MARC Family by Gordon Ross

Get ready for the event many Lower Keys residents have begun to await each year – The Annual Mattheessen’s Ice Cream and Waterfront Market Fresh Fruit Social. The event will feature such incredible culinary delights as homemade Strawberry Shortcakes from Louie’s Backyard’s Executive Chef Doug Shook; Banana Bread Ice Cream Sandwiches with warm caramel sauce by Blue Heaven’s Executive Chef Guillaume Pailloux; baskets of fresh strawberries that can be purchased to dip in the pink chocolate pool; and Mattheessen’s Make-Your-Own-Sundaes that are always a huge hit. Topping off the event will be magic provided by Miguel Arcangel and the drawing of the ReMARCable Five Meals Raffle.

This annual fundraiser is a huge hit with Monroe County residents and provides a great family oriented gathering during a relatively quiet time of the year.

“It’s amazing, friends, families and just people walking by gather and are able to sit down, enjoy some great tasting creations and enjoy each other’s company,” said MARC Public Relations Manager Gordon Ross. “I hear from those that attend every year how nice it was to just sit down with their family and or friends and enjoy some down time while helping our MARC family. It’s a great, and more importantly, affordable event.”

Events can only be successful with the help of wonderful sponsors, and the Ice Cream Social is no exception.

“Waste Management, Keys Energy, TIB Bank, Strunk/Ace Hardware and Key West Optical with Dr. Roger Otto have all stepped up to the plate to support this event,” said MARC Executive Director Diana Flenard. “Obviously we could not even have this event without our major supporters Mattheessen’s Ice Cream and the Waterfront Market. All in all, the support we get for this event is not only important to us, but a God send. We could not do what we do without the wonderful businesses that support our MARC events and it guarantees all funds raised go directly to the MARC family.”

The highlight of the event is the drawing of the winning raffle ticket for the ReMARCable Five Meals Raffle. The winner receives dinner for two at five of Key West’s finest restaurants. Participating again this year is the Marquesa, the 915, Bistro 245, Seven Fish and Latitudes/Sunset Key.

Tickets for the raffle can be purchased now at the MARC Plant Store, 1401 Seminary St. or the Restaurant Store, 1111 Eaton St. or at the event the day of until the drawing at 6:30 pm.

Last year, the Collins family was extremely pleased to find the fresh strawberries, but even happier to find the chocolate dipping fountain!
