Well, it has been so windy lately I’m starting to think I live in Chicago!
Maybe it’s not that bad, but it does seem to be lasting a little longer than normal.
When you finally do get an opportunity to get out on the water, anglers will be happy to find the reef and offshore fishing has really improved over the last three weeks. Those aboard The Best Bet have been filling the coolers with lots of quality mangrove and yellowtail snapper from the patch reefs and deeper reef edges.
Offshore, we are still catching dolphin and black fin tuna.
But when it is really windy and you just have to get out on the water it’s time for plan B.
Yes, plan B involves Florida Bay, which though quite a bit shallower than the reef, is easily accessed by the smaller to mid-size boats. Given the average depth across the Bay is only 8-10 feet of water, it is hard to have 6-foot seas in 8 feet of water.
The fishing is outstanding and often overlooked; there are plenty of nicely size mangrove snapper, sea trout, black tip and spinner sharks to keep the rod bent all day long! Add a couple grouper and some mackerel to the mix, and everyone is sure to have a good time. While it may be windy you can always go to plan B to make your trip a success.
Best Bet for the week ahead: Check the weather and head to the reef for some incredible snapper action. If it’s really windy, go to plan B!
