Back for the third year in a row since Karen Dennis, owner of The Stuffed Pig resurrected a long-standing tradition from the early days of her breakfast and lunch hot spot, National Pig Days will return to Marathon next weekend.
She, her staff and numerous local sponsors will again host Rosaire’s Royal Racing Pigs for National Pig Days 2011, a three-day festival full of all the things that make local festivals great – food, music, games and entertainment for the kiddos – and then some.
Proceeds from the unofficial nationwide celebration originally benefited the Stuffed Pig Scholarship Fund, but last year, Dennis continued her tradition of donating proceeds from the event to Grace Jones Community Daycare Center. Last year’s event raised more than $23,000!
“They need all the help they can get,” said Dennis, who employs a number of parents and grandparents at The Stuffed Pig. “Families here in the Keys can’t work if they don’t have day care.”
Notorious throughout the Keys for their breakfast service beginning long before the sun rises and lunch that continues until everybody’s full, “The Pig” has prepared a special dinner menu for Friday evening and all day Saturday afternoon.
Get a preview of your winning pig Friday evening with practice races at 6 and 8 pm. Enjoy music and dancing under the stars with Middle Keys favorite, Jessica Lilly and The Smoky Rhythm.
Additional races will be held throughout the day on Saturday beginning at 10 am and continue throughout the day with plenty of music, food and children’s entertainment. All monies from the first two days of pig races will go directly to Grace Jones.
If you can’t make it out Friday or Saturday, be sure not to miss Sunday’s festivities that will include Sam the DJ spinning his tunes and guaranteeing a great time for the entire family.
Races will be held at 10 am, 12 noon, 2, 4:30 and 6:30 pm. Wager your bets from the bleachers while the kids play a variety of games, take turns on the pony ride and exhaust all their energy in the bounce castle. The Stuffed Pig mascot will make a special appearance for photo opps, and a 50/50 raffle as well as a Silent Auction, with bidding open from noon to 5:30, will be available for the non-betting types. Items up for grabs include restaurant gift certificates, fishing charters, local retail items, passes to area attractions, unique artwork an array of services from construction to manicures.
The backyard barbecue themed menu, including sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs for Sunday’s festivities is included in the minimal price of admission for all this action – $15 for adults and $8 for kids 12 and under.
