Royal Furniture hosts regal grand opening

Grand opening supports Wesley House

The year was 1959. David and Charlotte Elwell had just moved to Marathon from New Jersey and their first order of business was to open up a Cash & Carry grocery store at 1757 Overseas Highway in Marathon. Throughout the years, the building has stayed in the Elwell family.

“Old Town used to be the center hub of the community,” said Marathon’s Royal Furniture owner Ryan Elwell. “The times have changed.”

The Elwell family is moving the furniture warehouse from the 6,800 square feet 17th Street location to the new 15,000 square feet location at 6001 Overseas Highway in Marathon.

“It’s bittersweet,” said Elwell, who added that the move has been a long time coming. “But, we needed more space and more parking.”

First on his to-do list is the upcoming grand opening celebration taking place on Saturday, May 6. “I can’t take the credit for the idea,” Elwell said, citing his brother Christopher’s charitable notion. The Elwell family has been doing charitable events throughout the Keys for decades, with strong roots in Marathon branching to Key West. “We finally have the space to be able to do more things in Marathon that give back to the community and we couldn’t be happier.”

As for the original building, major maintenance is planned for the dated space, which will continue to be a retail space, but nothing has been finalized yet.

We appreciate all that the Elwell family does for children and families in our community, including donating 100 percent of the funds raised from the grand opening to help promote positive parenting and assist with necessities such as diapers, baby wipes and baby food.” – Jeremy Wilerson, Wesley House Family Services
