Students produce last show of the school year

The public is invited to be delighted. The Marathon High School Drama Club will present “Seussical Jr.” on Friday and Saturday, May 1-2 at the school performing arts center at 7 p.m.

The Weekly was treated to a preview of a dress rehearsal earlier this week. And we can say it’s colorful and lively. The musical is a mash-up of some of the best Dr. Seuss tales – ‘Horton Hears a Who,” “Horton Sits on an Egg,” “Cat in the Hat,” and “Circus McGurkus” among others. In the production, Horton (Zachary Perry) is trying to save the Who’s from the jungle creatures in a show narrated by the Cat in the Hat (Natalie Ehrig) that happens in the mind of JoJo (Collin Marrs).

“It’s sort of a Horton hears a Who on Who on Who,” said Director Carrollyn Cox, explaining the layered texture of the show. It’s a lot of existential stuff with a happy ending, though, so don’t worry.

“All the favorite Seuss characters are in the show,” said Ariana Patterson who plays Sour Kangaroo.

Thirty cast and crew members are under the direction of Cox, who doubles as a well-loved MHS science teacher and the Academic Challenge Team coach.

Cox said the students have been rehearsing since February for the last show of the year.

Tickets are $8 and are available at the door.
