Sheriff’s Traffic Unit takes top award

The Sheriff’s Traffic Enforcement Team was recently awarded first place overall in the Florida Law Enforcement Challenge. They took the top award beating out 196 other participating agencies, including major metropolitan areas, such as Broward County and Miami-Dade County.
These awards mean that Monroe County has performed best overall in 15 traffic related categories, including reduction of traffic crashes and percentage of seatbelt compliance. Last year, the unit took first place among departments of a similar size, and took second place in the DUI Challenge.
This prestigious award comes with a significant amount of traffic safety equipment, valued at approximately $22,000, including radar and laser speed enforcement equipment, emergency lights.
