The Grinch's small heart grew three sizes that day.

A Florida Keys sheriff’s officer, costumed as the Christmas “Grinch,” issued onions instead of traffic citations to motorists slightly violating the speed limit outside a Florida Keys elementary school.

Lou Caputo, bureau chief at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, doled out about 10 onions to motorists who weren’t speeding more than 5 mph Monday afternoon in the Stanley Switlik Elementary school zone.

Caputo has worn the Grinch costume almost every holiday season since seeing actor Jim Carrey in the 2000 movie of the same name.

The Keys “Grinch” gives motorists a break, but also provides a lighthearted visual reminder to slow down and even wields a radar speed gun.

Caputo often gives drivers the option of the onion or a ticket. Nine times out of 10 they accept the vegetable and appreciate the holiday forgiveness.
