Entire play takes place in the loo
Here is truth in labeling:
“Bathroom Humor,” the final mainstage production of the season for Marathon Community Theatre, takes place entirely in the bathroom of a swanky home during an office party.
Everyone feels obligated to attend the party, though most would rather not be there, and the place to escape the drunks and dumb games is the bathroom. All the latest gossip — about co-workers and spouses, not-so-secret affairs and wardrobe malfunctions — is discussed. There’s even a down-on-his-luck Elvis impersonator.
“Bathroom Humor” was written by Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore, also the authors of “Love, Sex and the I.R.S.” The show opens at Marathon Community Theatre on Thursday, May 4 and runs through May 21 on Thursday to Saturday nights with a special matinee on Sunday, May 21. Showtime is at 8 p.m. and the matinee begins at 3 p.m.
The show stars Jessica Young, Trish Hintze, Nancy Smith, John Schaefer, Sean Sayer, Jimmy Dean, Jerry Nussenblatt and Neil Angiulo. It’s directed by Jim “Boomer” Kelly and Dale Colburn. It’s an ensemble show, with everyone sharing about equal stage time. But theater-goers won’t forget the role played by Sayer.
“It’s Stu ‘The Stoner,’” said Kelly. “If you couple the DNA of ‘Cheech and Chong,’ ‘Dazed and Confused,’ and ‘That 70’s Show,’ you will get that character.”
Kelly said he stumbled across the play while searching for a script to use during a special workshop for directors two years ago. He said it took some convincing to get the higher ups to agree to stage ‘Bathroom Humor.’
“There’s no nudity and no potty humor, but it’s fairly racy — a little cursing, some sexual innuendo and talk about drugs. It’s a house party. And you never know what goes on in the bathroom at a house party unless you’re in it.”
Those in the audience might never look at a bathtub, guacamole dip or plant food in the same light. And watch for John Schaefer (Arthur), who plays the role of boss, to have a memorable scene.
“Arthur makes an interesting exit. For that matter, it’s an interesting entrance too,” said Kelly.
The soundtrack includes hits from Tom Jones, Wham!, AC/DC, and The Grateful Dead.
