It looks like a big Tupperware container, but it’s actually a timed lock box for smartphones. Although it’s primarily designed as a device to force users to digitally detox, it can also be used to dispense rewards sparingly, be it wine or candy. Users set the unlock time and the box will unlock automatically at the specified moment. Available on Amazon for about $40.

Hearing from former engineers and creators of major social media outlets, the film explores how social media exploits users for financial gain through surveillance capitalism and data mining, and how its design nurtures an addiction. On Netflix.

LISTEN | THE DUTCH HOUSE
Ann Patchett’s 2019 novel, “The Dutch House,” tells a dark, modern-day fairy tale about a brother and sister who are exiled from the family home by an evil stepmother after their father dies. The siblings have a strong bond, and go on to lead successful lives, but they must eventually come to terms with their obsession about the past. The story is expertly narrated by actor Tom Hanks, although his distinctive voice is initially a distraction.
