JUNETEENTH IN MARATHON

Locals celebrate the Black Lives Matter movement

Why drive all the way to Key West? That’s what local Laurie Swanson asked herself, and promptly set about organizing a Black Lives Matter gathering in Marathon on June 19 with the help of Doris Hawkins. About three or four dozen gathered at Jesse Hobbs Park and listened to speeches by Swanson, AME Reverend Larry White, St. Columba Reverend Deborah McConaughey, Sheriff Rick Ramsay, Councilman John Bartus and Burnette Stuart.

Rev. Larry White, center, stands with his wife Judith, left, Destiny Royal, 7 years old, and Ora Greene.
Doris Hawkins and Charlotte Robinson, granddaughter of the late Grace Jones, listen to the speeches.
After the speeches, participants stand alongside U.S.1 in Marathon with signs. Drivers honked their horns in support.
