The Art of the Mask

John McBride returns to the Historic Armory for a festival of Mask-making and Design.

McBride established Maskerville Feathercrafts in Key West in 1994, as an impromptu outlet during that year’s Fantasy Fest, and his work has been internationally known ever since. McBride’s artistry has become a worldwide source of costuming for festivals, opera companies, and masquerade events. Six Maskerville designs are now sold through the legendary circus company, Cirque de Soleil.

“The class will explore a range of methods and techniques,” says Martha Barnes, program manager for The Studios of Key West, “Each participant will come away with a complete, fully functional self-made mask or headdress of feathers, fabric and embellishments just in time for the 2010 Fantasy Fest celebration.”

As part of the lead-up to Fantasy Fest and Halloween, The Studios of Key West and John McBride are offering two special workshops in mask-making and carnival head-dress construction on Saturday, October 16. Places are limited for early-season workshops, and registrations can now be made by calling 296-0458.

From 9am to 12 noon, the artist is offering his popular Maskmaking workshop, followed by a 1 pm to 4 pm class in Headdress design and construction. After an initial overview of design principals and materials, students will learn essential skills with gluegun, scissors, beading, and feather application—and go away with a new original design.

Students can register for one or both workshops.  The cost of one workshop is $60 for TSKW members and $75 for non-members, plus a $25 supply fee.  The cost of both workshops is $110 for TSKW members and $140 for non-members, plus a $50 supply fee.

Enrollment is limited, and a place can be reserved by calling The Studios of Key West at 296-0458.

Please note: McBride’s Art of the Mask Presentation, which was scheduled at The Studios of Key West this week, has been cancelled.
