15,000 pounds of lobster, enough ‘butta’ to fill a swimming pool and special deliveries of beer… comprise one succulent summer event: The 13th Annual Lobsterfest on Duval Street, the Florida Keys’ crustacean celebration which entices mobs of visitors to our islands every year.
Key West City Commissioner and businessman Mark Rossi urges the locals to join in the merrymaking, “Come on down and do the lobster dance! There will be about 300 to 400 people walking backward down the street.”
Rossi, the event’s founder is talking about the Lobster Crawl, which starts Friday night after the sun sets on Mallory Square.

Thirteen years ago, in the side alley next to the Rick’s complex, Lobsterfest started on a whim with just a couple hundred people. This year, 30,000 revelers are expected this weekend.
“That’s a lot of people coming down to do the lobster dance,” Rossi remarks.
The Lobsterfest Duval Crawl is sure to be a way to work up your appetite for the following day.
Starting at noon on Saturday the party will converge on the 100-500 blocks of Duval. The area will also be jam-backed with arts, crafts, merchandise, music and lobster done anyway you can dream … topped with lots of liquid gold.
“Don’t drown in all that butta,” Rossi advises.
This year you will also find another crustacean that has made its home in Key West’s hearts and plates, Key West Pink Shrimp, the Keys’ other delectable delicacy.
