The Turtle Hospital in Marathon would like to express sincere appreciation to Captain Hooks Marina and Dive Center, Sunset Grille and Raw Bar, Collectors Corner, and all the willing competitors for participating in the third annual Chicken Wing Eating Contest to benefit sea turtles in the Keys. Over $1600 was raised for the Turtle Hospital as sixteen teams raced to devour 75 wings, 15 sliders, and two pitchers of beer. Stan Haines and Ginger Snead provided commentary for the event, encouraging the teams to keep working towards an empty plate. Several hundred onlookers watched in awe as a small mountain of food quickly disappeared before the participants’ eyes.

Captain Hooks generously donated great prizes as well as orchestrated the event, Sunset Grille donated all food for the hungry participants, and Collectors Corner donated all trophies for the winners. A special thank you is dedicated to Ryan Schrassenberger and Elisa Davies at Captain Hooks for donating many hours to put the fundraiser together. The Turtle Hospital would also like to thank the Marathon community for coming out to support the preservation of endangered sea turtles and Florida Keys wildlife. The money collected for the Turtle Hospital will help pay for food and medications, educate the public through community outreach programs, and enable hospital staff to go out to rescue sick and injured sea turtles throughout South Florida. The Turtle Hospital prides itself on being the premier sea turtle center in the world and it is the Marathon community that continually helps the Turtle Hospital to maintain this goal.
