We are writing in our official capacities as the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment District, Islamorada, Village of Islands, the City of Marathon and the City of Key West and as local sponsors of the Florida Keys Quality Improvement Program.
We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to our eleven-term Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and to our Senators Bill Nelson and George LeMieux for all their leadership in securing funding from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for construction of the Florida Keys Advanced Wastewater Treatment Systems and stormwater management systems that are helping us preserve and protect our near shore waters and our unique Keys way of life.
Nearly $35,000,000 of Army Corps of Engineers funding has been divided among the four local sponsors and is being used to create jobs in the Keys and to secure an investment that will serve the Keys for generations to come. Every dollar of Federal Funding helps to reduce the burden on our citizens and local businesses that otherwise would have to bear the cost of sewer and stormwater control construction completely out of their pockets. This burden is especially heavy given the current economic conditions of our region.
Those who drive U.S. Highway 1 have noticed or perhaps been inconvenienced by the ongoing improvements being made to our wastewater infrastructure. We ask that you please be aware that these activities are necessary if we are to protect what is so wonderful about the Keys – our near shore waters and our way of life.
That is what the Florida Keys Water Quality Improvement Program is doing and that is why we owe a collective THANK YOU to Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen and Senators Nelson and Lemieux for all of your help and leadership in securing these deeply appreciated Federal funds.
