Florida Keys Marathon International Airport recently received an Airport Improvement Program grant (supplemented by the CARES Act) to cover the design costs associated with  moving the runway 40 feet to the north to meet Federal Aviation Administration airfield design standards. This grant funds the first phase, which consists of design, permitting and environmental mitigation. U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, announced the $750,000 award. “Eventually, this public health and economic crisis will be over and South Florida will be able to return to the bustling tourism that sustains our economy. When that happens, our airports must be ready to support what I anticipate will be a large influx of travelers who are ready to safely experience our beautiful beaches and one-of-a-kind community in the Keys,” said Mucarsel-Powell.  WEEKLY FILE PHOTO
