Wes Anderson’s latest masterpiece, “Isle of Dogs,” uses stop-animation (think those old Christmas specials) he mastered in “Fantastic Mr. Fox” (2009) to tell the heartwarming story of a young boy searching for his lost dog, Spots.
The story is set in the fictional Japanesse city of Megasaki, where the cat-loving Kobayashi dynasty has banished all dogs to the neighboring “Trash Island.” Starring numerous A-listers like Bryan Cranston and Scarlett Johansson along with many of Anderson’s regular collaborators including Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum and Ed Norton, the film is a consummate Anderson character study. Note to the viewer: The humans in this story speak only in their native tongue (occasionally translated via bi-lingual interpreter, foreign-exchange-student, or electronic device). All barks have been rendered into English.
