Cindy Smith prepares to lead the group of bike riders up U.S. 1 for the second annual Cindy Claus Lighted Bike Ride. Nineteen years ago, local Realtor Jane Wasmund contacted Smith, a postal worker, and asked the question “Who answers the Santa mail?” With the postmaster’s permission, the two have sought to answer the letters of local children and grant their wishes.

On Dec. 13, more than 100 bikes lit up U.S. 1 north in Key Largo during the second annual Cindy Claus Lighted Bike Ride. With Santa hats and bright bikes, riders took off from The Catch and proceeded northward before circling back to the restaurant. Proceeds from the bike ride go to fulfill the wishes of kids this holiday season. Nineteen years ago, local Realtor Jane Wasmund contacted Cindy Smith, a postal worker, via the Key Largo Post Office and asked “Who answers the Santa mail?” The postmaster gave permission, and the two ladies sought to answer local children’s Santa letters, while granting their wishes and helping Upper Keys families.
