Scavenger Hunt getting locals out for a fun photo challenge

Sick of watching TV or going on that normal walk on that same route? Well, there’s a new challenge awaiting locals to get out and enjoy.

It’s known as the Keys Scavenger Hunt, a socially-distant, community event and photo challenge for locals up and down the island chain. Creator of the event is Dr. Derek Papp, orthopedic surgeon with Baptist Health South Florida and contestant for the 2020 Big Kahuna, a fundraiser that benefits Good Health Clinic. More than 40 teams have joined to date with more coming on board by the day.

“Claudia Stober deserves all the credit,” Papp said. “We were brainstorming how to do something during these times and she suggested a scavenger hunt. We started talking about logistics and it evolved into this.”

The hunt officially began April 24, but it’s not too late to join, so grab your partner, roommates, pets, and whoever else in your house that needs an adventure.

So what’s needed? First, register by emailing KeysCovidHunt@gmail.com, and provide a name and team name. Then, read the rules and items to photograph and get to it.

Participants have until April 28 to complete the scavenger hunt. All people need is a form of transportation, an adventure team (your quarantine family), a camera and a list of rules and items. Participation is free as it’s designed to give people a thrilling experience to break away from the current coronavirus pandemic.

Various businesses throughout the Upper Keys have pitched in to provide prizes from gift cards to jewelry and a three-night stay at Dream Bay Resort. A party will be scheduled at a later date.

“Blue Marlin donated a necklace, Ankle Deep donated a half-day fishing trip and the Key Largo Laser Removal donated laser removal hair,” Papp said.

Those looking to help during the current pandemic can do so by donating to Good Health Clinic. The number of uninsured continues to rise during these challenging times, and anything you can do to assist those in need is greatly appreciated.

“More Keys residents qualify for our services than ever before, and we encourage them to come access the medical care they need,” said Kate Banick, executive for Good Health Clinic. “More of those who are able and looking for a meaningful way to help impacted Keys residents are donating as well, so we can continue to provide this essential service.”
