Key West’s bars and restaurants raised $11,677 for the local charities of Key West Rotary Children’s Dental Fund and Florida Keys SPCA in the 22nd annual Schooner Wharf Battle of the Bars last Sunday. The overall total is now $301,587 raised by this “high-spirited” charity event.
After months of intensive training that included rowing, strength conditioning and light jazzercise — but mostly drinking — the 24 teams waged a fierce obstacle-filled competition. Salute’s “Beach Bunnies” took home the championship title and had the deepest pockets at the event.
“It’s such a fun get-together. Everyone was extremely generous, all in the spirit of giving,” said Evalena Worthington, Schooner Wharf proprietor and event organizer. “The energy level and excitement to win the bragging rights were outstanding. All the teams and spectators were extremely giving, and the creative costumes made it an even more fun and festive day.”
