The Lady Conchs wrestling team traveled to the District 16 Championships on Feb. 9 to take on 16 other teams in the event held at Florida Christian High School. Shannon Briggs made school history by becoming the first district champion in Key West girls’ wrestling. Her younger sister, Ailee, brought home a second-place medal along with Natalie Arguello. Sheyla Figuiera took third and Lola Jaime was fifth. All five wrestlers qualified for the regional event held in Wellington on Feb. 18.
While the Lady Conchs were making school history, the gentlemen were putting in work of their own in preparation for their upcoming district bouts. They traveled to Jensen Beach for the Falcon Invitational on Feb. 10 and 11. The Conchs placed third overall as a team with multiple athletes earning medals. Alexander Marcotte, Ralph Riche and Andre Otto came home with tournament championships in their weight classes. Second-place finishers were Abram Canet, Dostmukhammad Bakhtiyoroy, Morgan Sukion and Elijah Miranda while Justin Tran and Weston Andrews finished third.
Key West wasn’t the only team to bring hardware back to the Keys. Coral Shores placed seventh overall at the Falcon Invitational. Finn McDonough won a third-place medal for his weight class. Devin Smith and Jack Hill each finished fourth.
The Conchs and Hurricanes will participate in the District 16 tournament in Key West on Feb. 17. On the line for each wrestler is the chance to move on to the regional and state championships.
