Show brings four strangers together at a detention center

The show features four strangers — a woman on the run, a brave refugee, a driven bureaucrat and a struggling dad — who intersect at an Australian immigration detention center. The series is partly inspired by the real-life story of Cornelia Rau, an Australian permanent resident who was unlawfully detained under the Australian government’s mandatory detention program. Season one is out on Netflix now, and it stars Yvonne Strahovski, Jai Courtney and Cate Blanchett.

The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern black community and running away at age 16, it’s not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it’s everything: their families, their communities and their racial identities. Many years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for white, and her white husband knows nothing of her past.

Love Letter is the legendary saxophonist Jimmy Heath’s stunningly elegant last testament, a take on seminal ballads. The album features songs written by Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie and Kenny Dorham. Partially recorded in New York before his 93rd birthday, Jimmy presided over a brilliant cast of colleagues and friends, and the result is pure Heath: polished, inventive, candid and beautiful. Guest artists include Wynton Marsalis, Gregory Porter and others.
