Local students win Young Musicians Award
At the final Keys Community Concert Band performance of the season, Upper Keys students received the “Young Musicians Award.” The students rehearsed with the Band during the month of April and performed with the Band for the last concert of the Performing Season.
Students from Plantation Key School included Nick Teach, Chloe Kohl, Katie McCormick, and Alexys Ramos. Kyle Palen, Erica Williams, Marshall Merriman, and Melissa Hutchison from Key Largo School also participated in the program. Coral Shores High School students, many of whom perform with the Band on a regular basis, included the following: Rainy Montague, Ismael Sandoval, Raisa Santiesteban, Cory Wasser, Tyler Teach, Michael Vaughn, Christina Genet and Lauren Pacho.
Lauren Pacho, daughter of Donna and Jorge Pacho of Key Largo, received the 2009 Young Musicians’ Scholarship. This scholarship is designated for a graduating senior who will continue with music in higher education. A member of the Band since 2002, Lauren plans to attend George Washington University in Washington, D.C. to study international relations and music.
A grant from The Hurlburt Family Foundation has supported the Young Musicians’ Program for several years. All participating students received either a tuner/metronome or a gift certificate for music supplies.
