LISTEN | 99% Invisible
This podcast, all about design, has been around for a decade and holds steady among the most popular and interesting, yet episodes are short and sweet enough for your drive to the grocery store and back. Topics vary from episode to episode but have one common theme: architecture and design are everywhere, mostly in the places we’ve stopped noticing. Each week, host Roman Mars explores the stories behind objects in our daily lives, from fortune cookies to why soccer balls are black and white and how money is made. READ | If You Leave Me
Korean-American writer Crystal Hana Kim’s debut novel “If You Leave Me” is a story of love and loss, set against a war-torn Korea and spanning geography and time. Kim examines a watershed moment in the life of the protagonist, Heimi, and explores the dogging question of the road-not-traveled. Kim draws from research and interviews with her grandmother, a Korean War survivor, to add historic accuracy and color to the landscape. Elle magazine calls the book “as beautifully layered as it is devastating.” If You Leave Me is available for purchase on Amazon.com.
SEE | Mid90s
Jonah Hill makes his directorial debut Oct. 19 with “Mid90s,” a nostalgic movie about a 13-year-old growing up in ’90s-era Los Angeles. Follow Stevie (Sunny Suljic) as he spends the summer navigating between his troubled home life with an emotionally and physically abusive older brother, and forms new friendships through skateboarding. The pic premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September to rave reviews and the soundtrack is already available on Spotify – great all on its own if you’re looking for a beachy southern California sound.
