The ballfields at Harry Harris Park in Key Largo are open following refurbishment from Hurricane Irma-related damages.

Early this year, the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners authorized an expedited process to refurbish and re-sod the ballfields for the Little League season. Monroe County Mayor Michelle Coldiron and County Commissioner Mike Forster, who represents Tavernier and Key Largo, joined staff from the county’s facilities department and a few families from the Upper Keys Little League last week to commemorate the reopening.

Especially notable was the attendance of Tom and Jan Gould, who are Thomas Lummus’ two grandchildren. The baseball fields at Harry Harris Park are named in honor of Lummus, who donated the first 2.2 acres of the park.

Repairs to Wilkinson Point and the swim area jetty are currently in regulatory approval with the Army Corps of Engineers through April 16. If moved through approvals, the request for proposal process can follow. There will also be a few fencing repairs that will be completed shortly.
