High-tech Halloween: Interactive map shows which homes welcome trick-or-treaters

The new interactive map at Lights on Old Town Key West lets residents place a virtual pumpkin at their address to indicate that they’ll be welcoming trick-or-treaters on Oct. 31. CONTRIBUTED

Anyone older than 30 grew up trick-or-treating at actual homes, not car trunks or decorated booths. And one of the rules was: Only go to houses whose porch light was on.

A new interactive map is helping families find those homes in Old Town by showing which homes will be welcoming Halloween trick-or-treaters on Oct. 31.

Residents can add their address to the map, which then indicates that they’ll be offering Halloween treats by placing a virtual pumpkin on the map. Residents can also add a note about what they’re offering — candy, toys, stickers or other Halloween goodies — or details about where to knock. Families can plan their walk around participating homes, choosing their starting point, preferred distance and number of stops, with the option to loop back to where they began.

The website will also feature an optional trick-or-treater counter, where families planning to participate can count themselves in and help neighbors get a sense of how many costumed kids to expect.

The idea is to help neighbors find one another on Halloween in Old Town and make it easier for families with young children to plan an evening around the neighborhood.
