The first-ever Cuban Sandwich Throwdown on April 16 was a delicious success at the Green Parrot Bar.
Five local restaurants — Sandy’s Cafe, Frita’s Cuban Burger Cafe, Kaya Island Eats, El Siboney and Yellowfin Bar & Kitchen at Ocean’s Edge Resort — entered their signature versions of the pressed sandwich on Cuban bread with pork, ham, cheese and pickles.
Sandy’s Cafe emerged as the winner of both the judges’ selection and the popular vote. Frita’s came in a close second.
The event was part of the Conch Republic Independence Celebration. Organized by Marcia Weaver, who owns Frita’s, the event was a fundraiser for the Key West Learning Center.
