July 4 marks the 250th year of the United States of America. In Key Largo, the big celebration will coincide with floats, classic cars, lots of candy and plenty of water.
Saturday will mark the 50th iteration of the Fourth of July Parade in Key Largo. Organized by the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce, expect to see a large patriotic procession proceeding north on U.S. 1 from Anthony’s Clothing Store to Laguna Avenue.
“Being that it’s America’s 250th, it’s a big moment and everyone wants to be a part of it,” said Suzi Youngberg, president and CEO for the chamber. “We do expect the parade to be the biggest yet.”
From its beginnings 50 years ago, the parade has turned into a tradition among the Key Largo and Upper Keys community. The procession has evolved with more decorated floats, spectators lining both sides of the parade route on U.S. 1 and a few more Super Soakers in the hands of parade participants and spectators.
“What makes this event so special is the community coming together,” Youngberg said. “There’s so much community involvement and excitement.”
Serving as this year’s parade marshal is David Kay, better known as “Video” Dave. A longtime supporter of the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce, he’s filmed and photographed the Key Largo’s biggest event for more than a decade.
“We wanted a true Key Largo community person and he was a natural fit,” Youngberg said.
From all the years filming on the side of the road, Kay said he’s thrilled to be leading the procession while riding in a vehicle this time.
“I love seeing all the people show up and show their patriotism with their colors, flags, and being all together as one big happy family,” Kay said.
The patriotic procession will take off from Anthony’s Clothing Store at 10 a.m. Parade floats will have the chance to vie for best theme, most beautiful, most patriotic, best business, best nonprofit and best overall.
The Freedom Fest family picnic will kick off at Key Largo Community Park. Beginning at 11 a.m., the festivities will include bounce houses for the kids, food and soft drinks and shopping vendors. New this year is watermelon eating, hosted by Houston Insurance Agency. The Key Largo Rotary is sponsoring free hot dogs for those 18 and under. The picnic will conclude at 4 p.m.
“It will be a family-friendly, community atmosphere,” Youngberg said.
The July Fourth festivities will end with a fireworks display over Blackwater Sound. The public is encouraged to view the fireworks, which are sponsored by the Key West International Airport, from their favorite bayfront establishment.
