The Lady Fins’ volleyball squad opened their season in the win column.
Marathon hosted Somerset Silver Palms on Aug. 18, battling through five sets to defeat the Stallions 3-2 and claim the first regular-season victory by a Keys team this year.
Two nights later, Marathon traveled to Keys Gate, where things got a little more complicated. The Knights edged the Dolphins 27-25 in the opening set, but a malfunctioning air conditioning system contributed to an increasingly slippery playing surface inside the gym. With conditions becoming unsafe, coaches agreed to halt the match and finish it later this season.
When the two teams meet again, Marathon will resume the match trailing one set to none rather than starting from scratch.
In their final contest of the week, the Dolphins fell 3-0 to Westminster Christian and will now turn their attention to some much more familiar competition.
Key West got off to a bumpy start, dropping three matches last week as the young but talented Lady Conchs continue to find their footing.
Key West opened Aug. 21 against St. John Paul II Academy and Boca Raton, falling 2-0 in both matches. The following day, the Lady Conchs lost 3-0 to True North Classical Academy, leaving Key West still searching for its first win of the young season.
This week brings another slate of tough opponents, but more importantly, the first head-to-head Keys action of the regular season. Coral Shores made its season debut at home against Marathon on Aug. 25 (results not available at press time), followed one night later by Key West making the short trip up U.S. 1 to take on the Dolphins (results not available at press time).
With all three teams finally in action, bragging rights are officially on the line.
