A 33-year-old Miami man was arrested on Aug. 24 for allegedly attempting to steal more than $8,600 from the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative by illegally altering a check.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Luis Albert Alonso was charged with organized fraud, possession of personal identifying information with intent to defraud, grand theft, depositing bank item with intent to defraud, and use of a two-way communication device to commit a felony.
The sheriff’s office said Alonso stole a dividend check from FKEC intended for one of his relatives, altered the check and made two mobile deposits using that altered check into his personal bank account totaling approximately $8,648. The FKEC and banks involved noticed discrepancies and notified the sheriff’s office. Detectives were able to collect evidence in the case with help from the banks and FKEC.
Warrants were obtained for his arrest and he was booked into jail on Aug. 24.
