The Upper Keys League of Women Voters will host a candidate forum on Wednesday, July 29 at 5:30 p.m at the Coral Isles Church, MM 90. The event is free and open to the public.
Voters are invited to learn more about the candidates on the Aug. 18 primary ballot. Several important races will be decided on this early ballot including county commission District 2, Mosquito Control Board District 2, county court judge and school board districts 1 and 5.
There will be an opportunity to mingle with the candidates from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Light snacks will be provided. Overflow parking is available at Coral Shore High School. At 6 p.m., the candidates will be given an opportunity to respond to questions about issues of concern to Upper Keys voters.
Sherie Hodies, Monroe County supervisor of elections, will present information on early voting, finding your precinct, vote by mail and sample ballots.
The forum will be live-streamed on the Upper Keys League of Women Voters Facebook page. A recording will be available there after the event.
While the races for county commission and mosquito control board are partisan, only Republican candidates qualified and no Democratic candidate entered the race. As a result, the Republican primary will effectively decide the outcome of the election. This triggers Florida’s open‑primary provision, meaning every registered voter — whether Republican, Democrat or independent — may vote in the primary. The other races on the ballot are nonpartisan and so every registered voter is eligible to vote.
