Not every runner wakes up before the sun and prepares for a seven-mile race across a bridge with no shade and a half-mile hill with a 65-foot vertical rise. But for the athletes brave enough to attempt the feat, that’s exactly what awaits them on the morning of Saturday, April 6 during the 38th annual Seven Mile Bridge Run.

Since 1982, the event has given a limited group of 1,500 runners the opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking views offered by the 7 Mile Bridge while it’s closed to vehicular traffic during this once-a-year treat. Some treat the race as a “fun run,” while the lead pack always ends in heated competition; 2018 overall winner Aydan Child of Marathon broke the finish line tape in a blistering 40:01 (5:54 per mile). There is, however, one catch: 65 minutes into the race, buses begin driving from the start line to the finish. Any runner the bus passes is required to get on board, so for many, the slogan is simply “Beat the Bus.”

Ahead of the 2019 race, we caught up with several of this year’s athletes to test their knowledge of the event’s history and find out about their unique pregame rituals. Spoiler alert: the bridge is 6.8 miles long, built by Henry Flagler, and the occasion of the first race was to celebrate the opening of the “new” bridge and raise funds for hometown student athletes. Honestly, we don’t know if anyone has ever been “accidentally” pushed off the bridge, but are willing to provide a cupcake in exchange for well-documented evidence.

Aydan was first across the finish line in 2018.
